SSA & VAS Open 2018

So, yesterday afternoon was the preview of the joint Society of Scottish Artists and Visual Arts Scotland Open at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh. A wonderful exhibition, so much great work, of all types. It really is a must see if you are going to be in Edinburgh before the 8th March. It’s really not fair to pick out favourites, as there is just so much amazing work… but I just love Bronwen Sleigh’s and Fiona Watson Art etchings… and then there’s Andrew Mackenzie and James Lumsden paintings, Amanda Baron’s glass work, Ffion Bletch, William Braithwaite and Felicity Bristow’s pieces and oh so many more… and I would list them all, but the names escape me at the moment… ..and photography – Mark Osbourne, Adam Fowler, John Maher. Alex Boyd, Emily Inglis… So yes, I have a couple of works here and very proud to have been selected, but do go to see everything else… Oh, then there’s the installations – Tim Taylor’s homage to the Becker’s and Rebeca Heselton’s Floating Villages… .. get the picture… Listed as No 1 on Jan Patience’s Six Art Happenings in Scotland you need to see the Society of Scottish Artists and Visual Arts Scotland Open 2018 at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh is their first joint exhibition of contemporary and applied art and features over 200 artworks across all disciplines. Runs from 29th January till 8th March 2018 at the Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, Edinburgh.

Borders : Threadneedle Theatre Gallery, London.

“Photographers from the UK and around the world have been selected to exhibit their work in BORDERS, an exhibition of photography, curated in response to the MARCHLAND season of performances and talks, in collaboration with Théâtre Volière and the Bridewell Theatre. MARCHLAND brings together artists, musicians and dancers to share remarkable stories and complex histories.” The above selected piece, is from my current In The Broken Places series, which is a response to my heart attack of April 2016, and as a result of which, each morning and night, I now reach for a plastic bag that contains the blood thinners, statins and other drugs I will take for the remainder of my life. My images are usually about finding beauty in the ignored and forgotten places. The Japanese have a term “Wabi-Sabi”, which I like to think applies. So, it’s only natural, that with this project, I’m seeking beauty in those things that have played, or continue to play, a part in my treatment and recovery, in this case, the aforementioned plastic bag. I believe, if you look hard enough, that beauty can be found anywhere, that beauty knows no boundaries. But, each morning and night, when I reach for this bag, I’m also reminded that we each have one final border to pass. The Borders exhibition was organised and curated by Shutter Hub and more information can be found here : Borders Blog Post The Borders Exhibition is on from the 15th January till the 16th April at : Bridewell Theatre Bar Gallery St Bride Foundation, Bride Lane, Fleet Street, London, EC4Y 8EQ www.sbf.org.uk Opening Times: 15th January to 16th April 2018, Mon – Fri, 10am – 6pm (viewed on request at St Bride Foundation reception), 6.30pm – 11pm during theatre performances. Closed Easter Weekend.

I have just been offered a solo exhibition at the Patriothall Gallery, Stockbridge, Edinburgh to run from the 7th – 23 September 2018.  A lot to do before then, but the basis of the exhibition will be the In The Broken Places and In Praise Of Shadows projects. I have loads of ideas… but can’t say too much at the moment 🙂 I’ll post further updates as things start to come together.
